There is no other option but to try and repair Windows first and then, if this is not possible, reinstall it. You must follow certain steps to try and recover or repair QuickBooks data whatever you need.

It also happens that should a computer crash when you are operating on QuickBooks but boots again then it is likely that the company file on which you are working could become damaged. In this case, you will need to follow different steps for recovery.

How to Repair QuickBooks Data From a Crashed Computer

Approach One
If the system does not boot and Windows has to be reinstalled or if there is some other damage follow these steps.
  • Do not attempt to start the system and reinstall Windows. Doing so could overwrite your QuickBooks data files.
  • Remove hard drive from the system
  • Attach it to another computer to the motherboard using a cable or as an external drive in a USB enclosure.
  • Switch on the system and when it has booted, run windows explorer and copy files from QuickBooks data folder on the desktop to the hard disk of this system and transfer to a pen drive.
  • Reconnect the damaged hard drive to the previous computer and try to repair Windows installation or carry out fresh install, install QuickBooks and then copy data files from pen drive to your QuickBooks folder.
Approach Two
If you are lucky and your system restarts normally after a crash but if your QuickBooks data files are damaged and will not open then try these steps.
  • Try the manual method. Launch QuickBooks, log in as administrator, select single user mode and start data verification from utilities by clicking on verify data.
  • You can also try to repair data file by going to file->utilities->rebuild data.
  • Do not shut down the computer or interrupt the process in any way until it is complete.
Approach Three
You need to install to run a diagnostic tool to get damaged files.
  • An alternative to the above is to install and run QuickBooks diagnostic tool which should automatically find corrupted data files and restore them to a certain point.
  • You can just as well install and run QuickBooks File Doctor to repair data files.
  • You can use third-party tools like Stellar data recovery to rebuild data files.
  • Once the process is complete the next step is to save a copy of the file on the local machine and also on the server on the desktop. Rename existing file and move it to another folder. Copy back the saved file to the QuickBooks data file location.
Approach Four
If the system reboots normally and QuickBooks launches but the file is damaged then you can use QuickBooks auto data recovery to recover corrupt QuickBooks data file.
