  • When the file extension ends with .qbm or .qbw.adr

Approach 1
  • Download and install QuickBooks File Doctor.
  • The QuickBooks File Doctor runs once it is installed.
  • Find company file from drop down list or locate it manually.
  • Enter admin password for company file and click next.
  • Choose the right host/server or workstation depending on where you are running File Doctor.
  • Click on Yes if you run File Doctor on computer hosting company file and No if you are running it on a computer where company file is not hosted.
  • File Doctor will analyze and diagnose the issue.
  • Close File Doctor.
  • Try to open the company file.
Approach 2
  • If QuickBooks is used on more than one system then use only one computer to host company file and turn off hosting on all other workstations.
  • Run QuickBooks desktop and select file and then utilities.
  • From the drop-down list pick “Stop hosting multi-user access” and click Yes and then close window.
Approach 3
  • Carry out the manual process by updating to the latest version of QuickBooks.
  • Configure QuickBooks desktop for firewall and security and include exceptions
  • Check for permissions to access the company file.
  • Try to open company file from another system.
  • Edit Windows Hosts File on the workstation and choose the right IP address as well as the name of Windows server.
Approach 4
  • If you were creating a backup and encountered the error then create a new folder in C drive.
  • Create a manual backup of the file to the newly created folder.
Approach 5
  • If you attempted to restore a company file and the error showed up then change the extension of the file name to .qbw.
  • Check file and directory path. If the characters exceed 65 and if there are spaces or special characters, remove them from the file or directory name.
  • Rename .qbw file and copy it to your local drive and then copy it to a network location.
  • From the file, menu selects open or restore company and then select restore a backup copy and click on next.
  • Click on local backup and then on next.
  • Choose the renamed file, click open and click on next.
  • When you click on save company file, make sure there are no special characters or spaces in the file name and then click on save.
