Hardware does age and it is replaced by newer computer systems. This throws up the question as to how to transfer QuickBooks to the new computer from older machine. It is easy if you have recent versions of QuickBooks but older versions of the software may not work on the latest versions of Windows. It is better to upgrade to newer versions of QuickBooks before you transfer to your new computer system.

You Can Follow These Approaches to Transferring QuickBooks to Your New Computer from Old

Approach 1

• Keep your QuickBooks installation CD and serial key handy for QuickBooks Desktop version.
• Run install and follow step by step process.
• Check that QuickBooks is operating on your new system.
• Now go back to the old system and open QuickBooks.
• Click on File and then on the open previous company to know where data files are located.
• Navigate to that location and copy the files to CD or external USB hard drive or pen drive.
• Plug the external drive into your new computer.
• Create a folder in the new computer with the same folder name as on the previous computer and with the same sub-directory path in the root drive and copy files from external drive to this location.
• Open QuickBooks on the new system, click on File-open or restore company and locate the new file you copied into the folder.

Approach 2 (Move QuickBooks Licenses to New Computer without Disc “CD”)

A question arises how do I transfer my QuickBooks license to a new computer?, So If you do not have an installation CD but if you know your product number and license you can download the software and install it and follow the above steps. If the product key and license are not legible on the label you can always check the confirmation email or go to the old computer and insert CD and launch the installation but pick Reinstall and it shows the license and product number. Note these down and click on cancel.

• You can visit QuickBooks License Lookup page and use the lookup tool using your phone number to log in and view your account.
• Once you have finished installation on the new computer you may need to register QuickBooks. Launch QuickBooks, click on Help and then on Register QuickBooks. However, this may not be necessary.

Approach 3 (You can use Move QuickBooks tool)

• Log in as administrator and create a complex password and note it down.
• The tool will copy company files to a USB drive in the old computer and you transfer the USB drive to the new computer and the migration tool will copy the files while creating the right folders in the right location for QuickBooks.
• The migrate tool copies desktop details, recent company files, related files, templates and forms, letters, reports and printer setting among others.
• If QuickBooks is in multi-user environment the tool will not copy payroll and payment set up. If you have Intuit Data Protect on the old computer you have to set it up all over again on the new system. Only 3 recent company files will be copied and moved. You have to manually copy and paste older files. Backup files will also have to be copied in a manual process.
• To operate the tool go to File-Utilities-Move QuickBooks to another computer and follow steps.
